The book that I am reading this week is called: Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel. Half Brother is about a boy named Ben Tomlin. Ben’s Mother brought home a new “baby brother”. Ben’s brother is an eight-day-old chimpanzee. Ben is not too thrilled about his new brother. His father is a renowned behavioural scientist. Ben’s father brought him and his family to Victoria, B.C. to pursue an experiment. Ben’s father’s assignment is to see whether chimps can learn sign language.
I connect to the part when Ben got his new brother. I was happy to have a little sister. Ben was not too happy to get his brother. I was very happy to have a new sister in my life. When I went to visit her in the hospital she was so cute and tiny. Ben had a different type of feeling when he got his brother. I connect to getting a sibling but not the same feeling as Ben had. I was so happy to know that I would be getting a sister and that I would have two siblings.
The theme of the story is about family. At first Ben was not pleased about having a chimp as his new brother. (SPOILER ALERT!) Throughout the book the relationship between Ben and his brother Zan grows much stronger. (SPOILER ALERT!) At the end of the book Zan made a B sign over Ben’s heart. Zan did that to show that they would be best brothers. (SPOILER ALERT!) Ben and, Zan actually do get closer to each other. Now Zan loves Ben.
At first I thought that Ben will never accept Zan. But throughout the book Zan and Ben grow fonder and fonder of each other. Ben actually accepts Zan for who he is. If I were Ben I would want to make my brother feel encouraged. Im glad that Ben now accepts Zan for the chimp that he is. The book turned out how I wanted it to. I’m glad that Ben and Zan now get along with each other.
This book was really good. I recommend this book to someone who likes more mature books. It has a few innappropriate words in it. This book depends on the reader. Once I started I didn’t want to let go. It draws so much attention to the readers eyes. It is also funny sometimes. I think that if you are a person that likes books that are more mature you should definitely read Half Brother.
